Being a parent carer carries a unique kind of emotional load. It is one that often goes unseen, unspoken, and unsupported. You are the one holding everything together. Managing appointments, advocating for your child, navigating systems, and constantly thinking ahead. You are not just parenting. You are coordinating care, holding emotions, and carrying responsibility that many people will never fully understand. And yet, so often, there is little space for you.
The Emotional Load of Being a Parent Carer.
The emotional weight of being a parent carer is not just about what you do, but what you carry internally. The constant worry, the hypervigilance, the need to stay strong, even when you feel like you are at capacity. It can feel like there is no switch-off. Even in quieter moments, your mind is still working, planning, and anticipating needs. Over time, this can become exhausting.
Why Parent Carers Burn Out (and No One Talks About It).
Burnout does not happen because you are not coping well enough. It happens because you have been coping for too long without enough support. Parent carers are often expected to just keep going. There can be an unspoken belief that because you love your child, you should be able to manage it all. But love does not remove exhaustion. It does not protect you from overwhelm. Burnout can look like emotional numbness, irritability, deep fatigue, or feeling like you have nothing left to give. And still, many parent carers keep pushing through, because they feel they have no other option.
You Are Allowed to Struggle Too.
There is space for your feelings here. You are allowed to feel overwhelmed. You are allowed to feel tired, frustrated, and even resentful at times. These feelings do not make you a bad parent. They make you human.
Your needs matter too. Your well-being matters too.
Holding Everything Together When No One Sees. So much of what you do happens behind the scenes. The mental load, the emotional labour, the constant adjusting and adapting. It can feel invisible. But just because it is unseen does not mean it is not significant. You deserve support, understanding, and a space where you can put some of that weight down.
At Daisy Rose Therapy, I offer a space for parent carers to be heard, supported, and held. A place where you do not have to be the strong one all the time.
Because you are carrying so much and you should not have to carry it alone.
